Lameness Assessment

Lameness is one of the most common reasons for poor performance in horses and identifying the root cause requires experience, precision, and a thorough approach. Our veterinarians bring a deep understanding of equine anatomy and biomechanics to every lameness exam, working closely with you to pinpoint the issue and develop a plan to get your horse back to peak performance.

Each evaluation begins with a detailed assessment of your horse’s conformation, palpation and flexion tests, and observation of movement in hand and under saddle when appropriate. If needed, diagnostic nerve or joint blocks may be used to help localize the source of pain or discomfort.

We also offer advanced diagnostic imaging including digital radiography (X-rays), ultrasonography, and can coordinate referral for MRI, CT, or nuclear scintigraphy when indicated.

Once a diagnosis is made, we’ll recommend a tailored treatment plan that may include rest, targeted medications, joint therapies, regenerative or alternative treatments, and other proven modalities — all with the goal of promoting healing, improving comfort, and optimizing your horse’s long-term soundness and performance.

Sport Horse Medicine

Sport horses are incredible athletes, and keeping them feeling their best is essential for top performance and long, successful careers. Our sport horse medicine services focus on optimizing health, managing performance issues early, and supporting your horse through training, travel, and competition.

We commonly treat conditions that impact performance, such as lameness, respiratory issues, and gastric ulcers. Using advanced diagnostic tools like gastroscopy and airway endoscopy, we’re able to accurately assess internal health concerns that can affect comfort and performance in the ring or on course.

Our treatment options include shockwave therapyregenerative medicine (such as PRPProstride and other orthobiologics), joint therapies, targeted medications, and custom rehab plans. We work closely with you to create a proactive care strategy tailored to your horse’s individual needs and competition goals.

Whether you’re managing an active issue or just want to keep your horse in peak condition, we’re here to support your athlete every step of the way.

Pre-Purchase Examinations

If you are thinking of purchasing a horse, it’s recommended to have a veterinarian examine the horse prior to purchase. The goal of this exam is to identify any pre-existing problems that may affect the horse.

Pre-Purchase examinations can only give information about the horse’s condition on the day of the exam. This is very important in making an informed decision about whether or not to purchase a horse, however it cannot guarantee future health or soundness.

The pre-purchase exam includes:

  • An inspection of the horse, which includes assessments of the horse’s eyes, mouth, skin, heart, lungs, and temperament

  • Musculoskeletal exam and Soundness exam which include palpation of joints and tendons, a movement exam (in-hand, on lunge-line, and under saddle), flexion tests, and application of hoof testers

  • Diagnostic imaging such as digital radiography, ultrasonography, and endoscopy are available.

  • Bloodwork such as a complete blood cell counts, biochemistry profiles and laboratory tests for drug screening are also optional.

  • Depending on the intent of the horse, other exams, tests and diagnostic modalities can be used

Dentistry

Dental care is important for a horse’s well being. Regular examinations and maintenance on your horse’s mouth will help to minimize discomfort and provides many benefits such as maintaining proper body weight, and allowing for more comfort while being ridden.

Floating your horse’s teeth means to rasp or file the teeth. This removes sharp enamel points that build up and cause discomfort to the cheeks, gums and tongue. These sharp points occur in most horses over time due to the grinding and normal wear on the horse’s cheek teeth (molars). In addition to reducing sharp enamel points, we will provide corrective floating on abnormal mouths with conditions such as parrot mouths, waves and sheared incisors.  Other dentistry services offered include: dental radiographs to identify diseased teeth and other pathology within the skull, extractions of loose/diseased teeth, senior and miniature horse dentistry, and performance horse dentistry.

Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy

Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy (VSMT), is a manual therapy used alongside traditional treatments to improve performance and comfort in horses. It targets restricted joints and spinal misalignments, commonly found in the neck, back, and pelvis, that can interfere with nerve function and cause issues such as poor impulsion, uneven gaits, attitude changes, and overall decreased performance.

VSMT involves the application of precise, controlled thrusts to restore normal joint motion and nerve communication. It is non-invasive, well-tolerated, and not painful for the horse.

VSMT benefits horses of all types: performance, pleasure, and geriatric, and can play an important role in rehabilitation from injury.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a time-tested practice that can play a powerful role in supporting your horse’s health, comfort, and overall performance. By stimulating specific points on the body, acupuncture helps restore balance and promote natural healing, making it a valuable tool in both preventative care and injury recovery.

Some of the key benefits of equine acupuncture include:

  • Pain Relief – Helps manage chronic pain, stiffness, arthritis, and musculoskeletal issues

  • Improved Mobility – Enhances flexibility and range of motion, especially in aging or performance horses

  • Stress & Anxiety Reduction – Promotes relaxation and can calm nervous or anxious horses

  • Faster Healing – Encourages circulation, reduces inflammation, and supports tissue repair

  • Digestive Support – Assists in regulating the digestive system and managing conditions like ulcers or colic-prone tendencies

Whether used on its own or alongside other therapies, acupuncture is a gentle, effective way to support your horse’s physical and mental well-being.
